The European Hub for Civic Engagement (the Hub) is an online platform that empowers civil society actors across Europe. It connects civil society actors from across Europe by providing tools to create community, share ideas and resources, find and access funding opportunities.
Countering shrinking spaces
With nationalism and populism on the rise and an increasingly hostile global environment, standards of human rights and democracy in Europe are put to the test and spaces for civil society are shrinking. With the European Hub, we take on the challenge and engage in support of the European Integration process by helping civil society actors to step up for a just, democratic, diverse, sustainable and impactful Europe. In order to achieve this goal, The Hub project has outlined and collected the needs of individual civil society actors as well as civil society organizations in a participatory and cooperative process, followed by concrete steps in IT development and further community building.
A digital toolbox to strengthen civil society
The „European Hub for Civic Engagement“ offers a digital toolbox to strengthen the civil society community. Similar to professional social networks, the Hub will provide operatives and activists with a personalised user experience in finding relevant peers, funding opportunities, events, best practices and news in their fields of work when completed.
Examples of challenges it aims to solve are the search for digital cooperation tools and partners, the exchange of knowledge, ideas and resources as well as the finding of funding opportunities for projects. Interested individuals and organisations are invited to join the „European Hub for Civic Engagement“ since 1 March 2021, the European Civil Society Day. The Hub started with an exploration phase offering essential functionality and a focus on collecting user feedback and has since extended its services.
Tools
Community: The Community Tool on the Hub enables users to network and build their community without the geographic or institutional hurdles. User can get together and exchange ideas in so called „bonfires“ on a variety of topics, either regionally or across all of Europe. It allows users furthermore to share updates and events with other users as well as easily connecting with users that match their interests.
Funding: As part of the Europe takes part! project, artists and cultural practitioners from Turkey to Belarus came together to develop a digital tool within the European Hub to support and encourage them in their daily challenges. As funding opportunities and the exchange about them were identified as the main problem, the developed solutions target this area. From now on, Hub users have access to: 1. a funding checklist to support work on project applications, 2. a funding blackboard for networking within the community, and 3. a customizable list of funding platforms
