„Europa, Europa“

An Eight-Stanza Poem About a Pole’s Growing Longing

A public sphere is not only created and stimulated through media or marketplaces – but also art and culture. Since they play such an important role in Europe and for connecting people, Das Progressive Zentrum felt like it was important to give them both a role at the Daring New Spaces Summit on the European Public Sphere.

Jakobe Mansztajn is a renowned poet from Poland. He wrote a poem solely for the Daring New Spaces Summit, called „Europa, Europa“.

He describes the poem as „It’s about the longing of Polish people for Europe and is told through a prism of Richard Linklater’s movie Before Sunrise

Tul’si Bhambry, who is a professional translator specialised in literature and poetry translated the poem for us into English. Tul’si lived our vision for translation, by watching the movie Before Sunrise to understand the context of the words.

The poem has been divided up into six different parts that participants heard Jakobe read throughout the Summit. Watch his full reading or read the poem in English and Polish below!

Europa, Europa, czyli ośmiostrofowy wiersz o narastającej tęsknocie Polaka

A potem przypomnisz sobie tamten film

Richarda Linklatera, stojąc na mrozie gdzieś w centralnej

Polsce: młoda Julie Delpy, młody Ethan Hawke.

On chciałby zostać pisarzem, ona chciałaby być

Paryża, on w drodze do Wiednia.

do trudnej miłości.

I błądząc

po pustych uliczkach, po zatłoczonych

deptakach, parkach, cmentarzu, siedząc w kabinie

diabelskiego młyna przy Leopoldstadt

i w pustej, gotyckiej katedrze, słuchając

“Come here” Kath Bloom w ciasnej budce

młoda Julie Delpy, młody Ethan Hawke, on chciałby

Europa, Europa, or an Eight-Stanza Poem About a Pole’s Growing Longing

And then, standing around freezing somewhere in central

Poland, you’ll remember that Richard Linklater film:

the young Julie Delpy, the young Ethan Hawke.

He’d like to become a writer, she would like to be

a flower in a meadow. They meet on a train (it always

begins or ends on a train, after all), she’s on her way to

Paris, he to Vienna. And before the poem even starts for real

the words between them will go round and round

like a spider in the window: coffee only in Rome,

the late Žižek, the early Kaurismaki, water, water,

greetings from faraway Gdańsk. And the landscape outside

will flash by like in an old film: on the left Europe

in full bloom, on the right Europe in decay, and before

Vienna station starts chiming like a little bell they’ll be half-way

into difficult love. At the station he’ll say let’s go

for a walk. And they’ll go, to make sure this is nothing, just

a brief flash. To the left, buildings freshly

scaffolded, to the right an old church, tightly

guarded by homeless people sleeping. And wandering

through empty backstreets, through crowded

squares, parks, a cemetery, sitting in a gondola

of the Ferris wheel in Leopoldstadt

and in an empty Gothic cathedral, listening to

Kath Bloom’s “Come here” in the tiny booth

of a record shop – they’ll find out that Vienna is not just

Vienna anymore, it’s their shared sunrise and sunset,

their shared east and west, to the left

the world, to the right emptiness. And this you’ll remember,

standing at the station in Warsaw (it always

begins or ends on a train, after all):

the young Julie Delpy, the young Ethan Hawke, he’d like

not to leave, she would like him to stay for a while.
