About Robert D. Atkinson

Dr. Robert D. Atkinson is a leading thought leader in innovation economics and president of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation. With an extensive background in technology policy, he has conducted groundbreaking research projects on technology and innovation, is a valued advisor to state and national policymakers, and a popular speaker on innovation policy at the national and international levels. In March 2018, Atkinson’s latest book, Big is Beautiful: Debunking the Mythology of Small Business. Prior to founding ITIF, Atkinson was vice president of the Progressive Policy Institute and director of PPI’s Technology & New Economy Project. He received his master’s degree in urban and regional planning from the University of Oregon and was named a distinguished alumnus in 2014. He received his Ph.D. in urban and regional planning from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1989.
