GPA Strategist Hour: Scenarios for the U.S. Midterms – Democracy, Power, and the Transatlantic Relationship
International Times: Wednesday 4 March 2026 | 9–10am (EST, Washington D.C.) / 2–3pm (GMT, London) / 3–4pm (CET, Berlin)
This GPA Strategist Hour examines the U.S. midterm elections through the lens of democratic resilience. We will explore potential scenarios involving electoral breaches, the use of intimidation and physical violence, the institutional safeguards designed to respond to such challenges and the critical role civil society will play.
Going beyond the domestic implications, the discussion will assess the broader geopolitical impact – what might any of these scenarios mean for the transatlantic relations? If democratic norms are tested in the U.S., how might this influence political strategy in Brussels and European capitals? Should European progressives articulate a clearer and more distinct position toward the Trump administration?
Inputs by:
- Mark S. Bergman, International Lawyer and D.C.-based Analyst Focused on Strengthening Democratic Resilience
- Gréta Bedekovics, Director of Democracy, Center for American Progress
The debate will be moderated by Maria Skóra, Policy Fellow, Das Progressive Zentrum.
Please note that the conversation will follow Chatham House Rules.
The event is a cooperation between the Center for American Progress Action and Das Progressive Zentrum.

The “Strategist Hour” is a regularly occurring one-hour online format hosted by Global Progress Action, an initiative of the Center for American Progress Action Fund. It provides a space for progressives to reflect on major political events, strategies and elections, convening high-level policymakers, pollsters, and practitioners from Europe, the US and Latin America. It is part of a broader transatlantic strategy process withcross-country working groups developing and testing narratives and strategic approaches. These deliberations are closely linked to major international convenings – including the Progressive Action Summit 2025 in London – and will continue at upcoming gatherings, such as the Global Progressive Mobilization in Barcelona with PM Pedro Sánchez (17–18 April 2026) and the Global Progress Action Summit 2026.
