Global Progress Action Strategist Hour: Anthony Albanese wins re-election in Australia

On Sunday May 3, PM Anthony Albanese and the Australian Labor Party won a decisive victory over Conservative opponent Peter Dutton and secured a second governing mandate. Albanese entered government in 2022, ending an almost decade long conservative governing period.

The election, called on March 28, challenged the recent trend of incumbent losses due to the cost-of-living crisis, showcasing that with a credible economic policy agenda, steady leadership, and a message of continued change it’s possible for governing center-left parties to win re-election. The international turmoil caused by U.S. President Trump on security and tariffs was an added factor to the election.

Long time Global Progress Action partner Paul Erickson developed and executed Labor’s winning strategies in 2022 and in 2025. Paul will share his thoughts on the campaign and election, the political landscape over time, how the first mandate played out and what lies ahead for Labor’s second term.

  • Paul Erickson is the National Secretary of the Australian Labor Party since 2019, previously serving as Acting and National Assistant Secretary and before working on several local elections. Erickson is recognized as one of the most skilled political strategist and campaign managers
