Public awareness of the issue of “industry 4.0” has been steadily growing in recent months. So far, however, the opinion columns seem to be dominated by articles emphasising the negative consequences of digitalisation for the labour market and for Germany as a location for business. Oft criticised is that Germany has been “caught napping” on digitalisation and thus urgently needs new ideas and initiatives to effectively win with its “Made in German” label. In light of this, the “Industry 4.0” project seeks to expand the discourse on industry 4.0, moving it away from a technically-orientated one beset with fear to one which also encompasses the socio-political, and future-orientated and proactive options for action. The project is being implemented together with the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, IFOK GmbH, the VDI (Association of German Engineers) and in closely cooperation with German and European academic and research institutes.
