The project \u201cCountering Populism in Public Space\u201d benefited from the experiences of the dedicated participants and prepared the results for media use.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past few years, civil society organisations&nbsp;have been faced with greater challenges posed by anti-democratic populism. Organisers of political discussion events often find themselves confronted with&nbsp;a worldview that is diametrically opposed to their own and struggle with finding ways to confidently deal with provocations. Some civil society organisers, however, have in recent years found ways to meet the challenge. The project team of&nbsp;\u201c<strong>Countering Populism in Public Space<\/strong>\u201d under the lead of project manager Paulina Fr\u00f6hlich has invited them to workshops to exchange their experiences. The best strategies and most controversial aspects made it into our Guideline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<strong>Guideline for Promoting a Democratic Culture of Debate&nbsp;<\/strong>answers, among others, the following questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How to react if someone from the audience disturbs the discussion?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What to look out for when inviting panelists?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which qualifications does the moderation need?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why are some discussion formats not suited for controversial topics?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About Countering Populism in Public Space<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The project&nbsp;\u201cCountering Populism in Public Space\u201d was sponsored by the&nbsp;<strong>Federal Ministry for&nbsp;Family&nbsp;Affairs, Senior Citizens,&nbsp;Women&nbsp;and&nbsp;Youth&nbsp;(BMFSFJ)&nbsp;<\/strong>and was supported in terms of content by the main partners&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amadeu-antonio-stiftung.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amadeu Antonio Stiftung<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.neuemedienmacher.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Neue Deutsche Medienmacher<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Further projects against populism<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201eCountering Populism in Public Space\u201c is one of many projects of Das Progressive Zentrum which deals with the topic \u201cpopulism\u201c. The research project in Spring 2018 investigated the role of traditional media in legitimising and discrediting populist parties in Germany and Great Britain&nbsp;<strong>\u201eMediating Populism\u201c<\/strong>&nbsp;in Spring 2018 investigated the role of traditional media in legitimising and discrediting populist parties in Germany and Great Britain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, a comparative policy brief with partners from&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/tnova.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Terra<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>Nova (Paris)<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/voltaitalia.org\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Volta (Mailand<\/strong>)<\/a>&nbsp;analysed the state of populist parties in France, Germany, and Italy. The Thinking Lab on Populism&nbsp;<strong>\u201eDialogue on Europe\u201c<\/strong>&nbsp;even brings together six national perspectives from Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, and Germany. With the fact-checking project&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/trulies-europe.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201eTruLies\u201c<\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong>as well as the&nbsp;<strong>policy brief on dealing with populists in the German Bundestag<\/strong>&nbsp;(see articles in Die Zeit, Berliner Zeitung, Frankfurter Rundschau), Das Progressive Zentrum developed a
