In this report, John Austin reflects on the experiences of the tour<\/strong>, which took participants to several iconic mining and steel regions: Charleroi, in Belgium\u2019s Wallonia region; the Saarland linking Germany and France; and Saxony in Germany\u2019s former East. The group gained vital insights into the practical daily work of policy and program shaping as well as community engagement and empowerment. Lessons learned include, for one, that transformation can succeed if it is embedded in local identities and taps into people\u2019s pride in their communities<\/strong>. For another, local actors must be given the tools for proper governance, and decision-making should be regionally centered for effective place-based policy<\/strong>. This ensures that quality of life and place can be broadened, and investments in good public services are targeted well. After active and continual transatlantic learning, Austin observes that much experimentation in place-based policy is underway, and much more is needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

John Austin is a Senior Fellow in the\u00a0Eisenhower Institute at Gettysburg College and non-resident Senior Fellow at Brookings Institution. In these roles he has been the author of some of\u00a0the most influential analysis of the politics and economics of industrial heartlands,\u00a0as well as\u00a0tangible guides and guidance\u00a0for policymakers around constructive actions and change. <\/div><\/div>
Beyond the anger and anxiety: Insights into the attitudes and actions that threaten our democracies \u2013 and what to do about it<\/a><\/h6>
In his new paper,\u00a0John Austin\u00a0delves into the global rise of nationalist and anti-democratic sentiments, particularly in economically declining industrial heartland communities in Europe and the United States. Based on the learnings from the\u00a0Industrial Heartlands and Democracy Study Tour in November 2023, the\u00a0paper outlines the reasons behind people\u2019s dissatisfaction and anger. Factors such as economic decline, geographic inequality, social alienation, and political disillusionment emphasize the urgent need for leaders to understand the underlying emotions and experiences driving these anti-democratic sentiments.<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
