{"id":5490,"date":"2019-10-14T12:19:00","date_gmt":"2019-10-14T10:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dpz.medienlabor-hosting.de\/?p=5490"},"modified":"2022-06-17T09:35:14","modified_gmt":"2022-06-17T07:35:14","slug":"maria-skora-comments-on-polish-national-elections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.progressives-zentrum.org\/en\/maria-skora-comments-on-polish-national-elections\/","title":{"rendered":"Maria Sk\u00f3ra comments on Polish national elections"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>On the day of the Polish parliamentary election in 2019, our Head of Programme International Relations talked on British television about the obvious success of the ruling PiS party \u2013 and the less obvious one of the Left.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Poland has elected a new parliament \u2013 and, with the success of the national-conservative \u201cLaw &amp; Justice\u201d party (PiS) under party leader Jaros\u0142aw Kaczy\u0144ski and Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, which has ruled since 2015, it produced an expected (and feared) result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.progressives-zentrum.org\/person\/dr-maria-skora\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maria Sk\u00f3ra<\/a>, Head of Programme \u201cInternational Dialogue\u201d at the Berlin think tank Das Progressive Zentrum, analysed the predicted election results and its background for an international audience at \u201cBBC World Service\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cPoland is not a poor country anymore\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Maria Sk\u00f3ra, the renewed success of the PiS party is based on its 2015 election promises, especially in the field of social policy: \u201cPoland is not a poor country anymore and the Law &amp; Justice Party knows that the citizens need to benefit of the Polish economic success, for example through a higher minimum wage or more social transfers for families.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Liberal losers, secret winners<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The liberal opposition, however, is much less successful than the second place suggests. The three-party alliance, which includes former Donald Tusk\u2019s party, lost 4.3 points and some parliamentary seats compared to 2015. As a consequence, \u201cthey really have to re-establish themselves &amp; re-establish a convincing narrative for Poland\u201d, Maria Sk\u00f3ra said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A look at the other end of the results table shows that a progressive voter potential exists. After a catastrophic election defeat in 2015, the left made it back to the parliament.
