We certainly do believe that we need more incremental innovation both with regards to the political space and the economic space. But we also realized that this is not enough. The founder and leader of \u201cThe Alternative\u201d party in Denmark stressed in his keynote speech that relationships \u2013 to one\u2019s community, oneself and nature \u2013 have a crucial role in revitalising our democracy. She made the case that no movement or political system can sustain itself without appealing to the emotions of its subjects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her approach is to develop leadership strategies that focus on telling personal, engaging stories:&nbsp;\u201cI understand \u2018personal narrative\u2019 as a leadership skill, so skillfully using personal narratives as drivers for change. These narratives tell us what the people care about, why it is that they care about it and then because they deeply care they feel inspired to act and to involve others to act.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A third perspective on the future of democratic engagement was given by&nbsp;<strong>Neal Lawson<\/strong>, author, journalist and director of \u201cCompass\u201d in the United Kingdom, who talked about \u201cTop-down and bottom-up? Citizen participation in times of transformation\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He attempts to reconcile the dichotomy between the two approaches, since&nbsp;\u201ca future that is negotiated has to come from the bottom-up&nbsp;<em>and<\/em>&nbsp;the top-down. We see the emerging practice from civil society in localities everywhere. But it has to be nurtured, it has to be supported, it has to be accelerated and aggregated and that means the role of the state nationally and locally has to facilitate active citizen participation. So top-down and bottom-up have to come together in a fault-line in the good new society.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity is-style-default\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">We have recorded more than 10 sessions!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-horizontal is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-1 wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.progressives-zentrum.org\/innocracy-2019-rewatch-it-online\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Innocracy 2019 Videos<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity is-style-default\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Golden Autumn Night<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Golden Autumn Night was inaugurated by&nbsp;<strong>Sabrina Schulz<\/strong>, Policy Fellow at Das Progressive Zentrum, who spoke about \u201cThe just transition and its discontents\u201d. She stressed the need to combine social justice and climate policy demands, to account for an equal distribution of the costs of the climate crisis in society.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to her, this can only be done through an active state: \u201cBy definition, a just transition is about an active state. A state that provides very clear regulatory frameworks on the permitted amount of emissions for all sectors of the economy in a given period. But it\u2019s also about a state that makes sure that the burdens of climate policy are distributed fairly in society.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" src=\"https:\/\/www.progressives-zentrum.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Sabrina-Schulz-500x333-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5447\" \/><figcaption>Speaker Sabrina Schulz during her Keynote speech<br><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The day culminated in a panel discussion titled \u201c\u2026 And now what?! How to master the socio-ecological transformation of democracy\u201d, featuring&nbsp;<strong>Emma Fuchs<\/strong>, a climate activist at \u201cFridays for Future\u201d,&nbsp;<strong>Sven Giegold<\/strong>, MEP for the Greens\/ EFA,&nbsp;<strong>R. Andreas Kraemer<\/strong>, who is the founder of the \u201cEcologic Institute\u201d and an adjunct professor at Duke University,&nbsp;<strong>Oph\u00e9lie Omnes<\/strong>, a presidium member of the Young European Federalists, as well as,&nbsp;<strong>Ria Schr\u00f6der<\/strong>, the president of the Young Liberals Germany.&nbsp;Among others, they debated the possibility of a European approach to climate protection, in which they criticized, both, the insufficiency of the European institutions and the market to regulate itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Thanks&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DPZ_Berlin?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">@DPZ_Berlin<\/a>&nbsp;for organizing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Innocracy2019?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">#Innocracy2019<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/AutumnNight?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">#AutumnNight<\/a>. This final debate gives me hope that we might soon be ready to fight the climate crisis.
