Sophie Pornschlegel and Robert Sch\u00fctte explain what the coalition dispute in Germany means on a national and European level in interviews with the BBC and the Spanish newspaper \u201cLa Raz\u00f3n.\u201c Johannes Hillje discusses political \u2018framing\u2019 in three major news outlets, pointing out the dangers of expressions like \u201ctransit centres\u201d and \u201casylum tourism.\u201d And Fedor Ruhose explains how established parties should compete against their right-wing populist contestants in this year\u2019s regional elections in an op-ed in \u201cFrankfurter Rundschau.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coalition dispute<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Policy Fellow Sophie Pornschlegel <\/a><\/strong>explains in the BBC World Business Report how German interior minister Horst Seehofer\u2019s challenge to Chancellor Angela Merkel concerning asylum policy unfolded into a full-blown governmental crisis to an international audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Policy Fellow Robert Sch\u00fctte <\/strong>commented on the consequences of the Bavarian rebellion for the Spanish daily La Raz\u00f3n<\/em>. The demands of Seehofer\u2019s CSU party are endemic for a continuous shift towards the right in the state.\u00a0However, if the party decides to dissolve its union with Merkel\u2019s CDU, it risks losing its grip on power both in Berlin and in Munich. Political Framing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The concept of \u201cframing\u201d in political analysis describes how subtext is created in political language in order to carry certain messages, and to suggest simple solutions by playing with the associations language evokes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Policy Fellow Johannes Hillje<\/a> <\/strong>put the topic on the national media\u2019s agenda, commenting on the use of framing in the recent migration debate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
