Enlarged Europe

Situated in Europe's old and new heart, Berlin, the Progressive Zentrum is centrally located to facilitate not only progressive debates but also a political exchange between Western and Eastern Europe. In cooperation with our partners from Central and Eastern Europe we will jointly promote a lively discussion about the common future of the new Europe. Our major claim is: The European project will only succeed when we successfully achieve integration of the new member states into the existing European Union as equal member states.

Currently, the Progressive Zentrum research focus is on the modernisation of the European Economic- and Social Model using the example of economic and social reforms in Poland and Romania. The project is a central part of our research cooperation with the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

  • A good overview on the reform programmes of the EU member states is provided by the "The Lisbon Scorecard VIII" published by the Centre for European Reform (CER) in its new 2008 issue.

  • A detailed analysis of the new Polish regime of Donald Tusk has been published by Katarina Niewiedzial in the magazine "Berliner Republik" (issue 6/2007, in German)
  • For an assessment of the parliamentary elections in Poland, see the guest commentary by Katarina Niewiedzial in the magazine „Die Welt“ from November 23rd 2007 (in German).
